BN Wire Story - Kyoto Update

Source: BN

Feb.27, 2002  16:42

OTTAWA -- Federal New Democrats are calling Alberta Premier Ralph Klein's comments on the Kyoto accord ``stupid.''

Frustrated by calls to sign the accord despite the costs, Klein notes that quitting breathing would also reduce global warming.

New Democrat M-P Bill Blaikie says if Canadians listen to Klein, ``we all will stop breathing one of these days because the air won't be breatheable.''

Blaikie says he can't understand suggestions from the Alberta government, the oil industry and others that Canada should simply not ratify the Kyoto environmental accord.

Blaikie warns the planet is at stake unless countries, including Canada, act to reduce emissions of so-called greenhouse gases.

Prime Minister Chretien maintains Canada must enact the Kyoto protocol to do its part in curbing climate change. (BN)
